Understanding the Terms:
total number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy
back to full equation
How many stars do you see when you look up at night? How many more do you think you could see if you were away from street, town, and city lights? How many more do you think can be seen from other points on the Earth? All those stars are part of the Milky Way Galaxy. Moreover, they are only a very, very small portion of all the stars in the Milky Way. Afterall, the Earth and Sun are part of just one outer arm of the Milky Way (a spiral galaxy).
So how many stars do you think there are in the Milky Way Galaxy?
